Ancient India sure was a land of inventions, but I don’t really know whether we can say it now. Anyway in this article we will see what out standing inventions from India are being used all over the world even today.
The earliest known form of buttons were created in India, Indus Valley Civilization to be specific. These buttons were more like ornaments and some types had holes in the center to attach it with clothing. They were created using sea shells and are about 5000 years old.
Shampoo in its earliest form was originated eastern regions of the Mughal Empire that ruled India. The term Shampoo was derived from the Hindustani word chāmpo during the colonial era in 1762.
3. Cotton cultivation
Cotton was being cultivated for clothing purposes long back, 5th millennium BCE to be specific. This was when the west were still using wool and other forms of animal skins.. The cotton industry in India was well developed and methods like cotton spinning and fabrication were being used until the modern Industrialization of India.
People from India used rulers to measure lengths even before 1500 BCE. These rulers was made using ivory and were of great accuracy. It was widely used by carpenters.
5. Radio/Wireless communication
Although Marconi got the full credit and received Nobel price for contribution to the development of wireless telegraphy, Sir. Jagadish Chandra Bose was the first to use a semiconductor junction to detect radio waves, and he invented various now commonplace microwave components. In 1894/1895 he ignited gunpowder and rang a bell at a distance using millimetre range wavelength microwaves.
The invisible light can easily pass through brick walls, buildings etc. Therefore, messages can be transmitted by means of it without the mediation of wires. – He wrote in his Bengali essay “Adrisya Alok (Invisible Light)”
6. Crystallized sugar
Crystallized sugar was discovered in India during time of the Imperial Guptas, around the 5th century AD. It was Indian sailors who introduced this type of sugar to various parts of the world during their travel. established its first sugarcane plantations in the seventh century after learning the process from Indians.
7. Zero symbol
The concept of Zero both as a number and a symbol is attributed to India in which people were using zero for practical calculations. Zero was treated like any other number, even in case of division by 9th Century AD. Pingala from India used the word śūnya explicitly to refer to zero in 3rd or 2nd century BC.
8. Cataract surgery
The earliest form of Cataract Surgery was performed in India in 800BC. It was then introduced to several other countries at that time by the Indian physician Sushruta. It was often that Greek philosophers and scientists travel to India for observing the whole procedure.
9. Diamond mining
Diamonds were first recognized and mined in India around 5000 years back. Until 18th century India was the only source for Diamonds and India exported diamonds to Europe and several other countries!
10. Flush Toilets
You would think flush toilets are a modern world invention. But in fact flush toilets were first created in India during the Indus Valley Civilization which is almost 6000 years back. During this time, almost all the houses in the cities of Harappa and Mohenjo-daro had flush toilets which were attached to a sophisticated sewage system.
